Printing inks
Eco-friendly ink is one of the three components of green printing. Traditional inks are considered harmful. They are generally petroleum or plastic based and contain unsafe compounds and chemicals that are both difficult to dispose of and that harm the environment. Eco-ink is typically vegetable or soy-based and much kinder to the earth.
In addition, the product benefits of eco-inks make it apparent it’s an obvious choice. Most eco-inks also produce brighter and more vibrant colours compared to other inks, therefore the quality of print is enhanced truly promoting the power of our green ink counterparts.
All about ink
Most inks have the same composition. Inks require colourants (i.e. pigments or dyes), additives that help improve performance on the press, and the vehicle or carrier medium for the other elements. The vehicle can be water, solvent, or oil based.
Early inks were derived from natural, plant-based sources. By the early 1970s, the supply of vegetable oils was limited so manufacturers used petroleum products. Today, synthetic products have surpassed vegetable-based alternatives, but environmentally conscious manufacturers and consumers are reverting back for so many positive reasons.
What is vegetable-based ink?
Common oils used in vegetable-based inks are soy, linseed (flax), canola, and safflower. Soybean and linseed oil are the two most prominent. Each type of oil comes with its own advantages; for example, soybean oil is relatively clear so it can provide more vivid colours than petroleum-based oils. Vegetable-based inks often employ a blend of oils to maximise quality and minimise drying times.
Our ink choices
It is without compromise, that eco-inks are used within the printing of our beautiful colourful books. The inks used are vegetable oil based, specifically linseed oil. The use of vegetable ink, has allowed our print provider to eliminate their emissions of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the atmosphere.
Printing materials
Eco-friendly print material is one of the three components of green printing with notable innovations that have allowed eco-friendly options. These products come from recycled or other sustainable materials that are 100% biodegradable or recyclable. The materials used also come from sustainable suppliers and use little to no chemicals in its processing.
Our material choices
You will notice that the inner pages of our picture books have a crisp ‘natural’ feel as these are always printed on uncoated paper. All picture book coverings will be coated with eco-friendly water based wrap and will be fully recyclable. Although we don’t encourage our books to be quickly disposed of, it does bring a range of greater environmental benefits in terms of renewability and recyclability and avoid the use of chemical coatings to gloss finish some books. All of our colouring books are printed on uncoated or recycled paper and are fully recyclable along with our packaging used for distribution and sales.
We actively encourage acts of kindness and not to recycle your books through mainstream recyclable but to donate to play schools, charities or local book swap communities. Find out more about more about our recyclable options.
